Open source investigation techniques are becoming more and more popular amongst journalists. From human rights violations to environmental issues - a wide range of topics can be researched solely based on freely available online sources.
Sometimes it is enough to be creative in using online search techniques to get to results. In other cases, we need tools to help us do our research.
A category of tools that are often neglected by open source researchers are command line tools. Command line tools are tools that can be used only via the text-based user interface of your computer. Using those tools will open a whole new world of research techniques to you, they can help you do everything from scraping or archiving online posts to analyzing satellite imagery.
We will present relevant command line tools for open source investigations and share with you how Bellingcat and others use those tools for their work. This presentation is suitable for beginners, technical knowledge is not required.

Aiganysh Aidarbekova kam 2018 als Forscherin und Trainerin für Zentralasien zu Bellingcat. Sie führt Open-Source-Untersuchungen durch, die von Flugverfolgung bis hin zu Korruption reichen. Zu ihren jüngsten Arbeiten gehören die Dokumentation der Protestunterdrückung in GBAO, Tadschikistan, Online-Verschwörungen in Europa sowie Konfliktforschung in Zentralasien und der Ukraine. Aiganysh ist außerdem Teil des TechTeam-Projekts von Bellingcat, das sich auf datengesteuerte Untersuchungen und Werkzeugentwicklung spezialisiert hat. Durch die Leitung des Bellingcat-Workshops hat Aiganysh Hunderte von Journalistinnen und Aktivistinnen auf der ganzen Welt in den Methoden der Open-Source-Recherche geschult.
